Notes for Archbishop Geoffrey FITZROY OF YORK
Destined for the church, he proved more aptly made for political affairs. He was more loyal to his fathers than his “legitimate” half-brothers, becoming Henry’s chancellor in 1182 and being the only one of Henry’s sons at his deathbed in 1189. After Henry’s death, Richard I sacked him as chancellor and forced him to finally take holy orders as Archbishop of York.
