Notes for King Kenneth MACALPIN I
Kenneth I of Scotland ca 841-ca 859
292Succeeded to the throne of Galloway, then Dalriada ca 841. He was accepted as king of the Picts ca 843, thus uniting two of the four major power blocs. His title probably came from his mother, a Pictish princess, since descent among the Picts was matrilineal. He brought the Lia Fail, or Stone of Destiny, to Scone, a Pictish holy place, after his en-kingment. Sometimes called the “Scottish Alfred” for his combination of military, scholarly, and organizational skills. Died of cancer in 859, leaving the kingdom to his brother Donald.
