Notes for Deacon Nathaniel * HOLCOMB
From Barbara Bartels’ notes:130
In 1675 Nathaniel and Mary moved from Springfield MA to the new community of Simsbury CT, where Nathaniel was termed a farmer and nine of their children were born. The following year Simsbury was burned to the ground by Native Americans, but was rebuilt in 1677. The Holcombs made their home in the northeastern part of Simsbury, which was afterward divided into the town Granby, next called Turkey Hills, and now called East Granby. Nathaniel owned Lot 13 which had been granted to his father and resurveyed to Nathaniel in 1688. His brother Joshua owned Lot 12.

In 1687 Nathaniel was a signer of an agreement with the pastor of the church of Hop Meadow. He also participated in an offer to citizens of Salmonbrook and Low Meadow for exchange of parts of land “to better fortify against Indians” in 1688. He was among those who subscribed to the covenant of the church in Simsbury in 1697-1710.

Nathaniel was chosen Deputy to the General Court of Connecticut for six terms, 1703-1706 and 1720-22. Sometime during his second term Mary died, and he remarried early in 1723.

His will was signed on 7 Feb 1740/41. In an unusual circumstance, his will was probated the same day that he died, 5 Mar 1740/41. He left various real estate in both Windsor & Simsbury to the four sons, including land at “Barn Door Hill” to John, our ancestor. To the five living daughters he left the movable estate. To the unnamed son of his deceased daughter Martha, he left 20 shillings to be paid by sons Nathaniel, Johnathan, and John, to “buy him a bible.” (…Books were highly valued, and often mentioned in estates.) To his wife Sarah he left only 20 shillings, “besides what I have already secured for her before marriage.”130
