Alfred died when he was hit by a train at the platform in Whiting. No one knows how the accident happened, and foul play has never been ruled out.

He is buried in the Braceville-Gardner Cemetery, located between the two Illinois towns. He shares a monument with his sister Laura Sophie and other relatives Josephine Dheur, Ernest Ronveaux, and Joseph Nossent.
