Committed to mental institution by her brother Joe c. 1925 after bout with high fever left her brain damaged. Spent the rest of her life in institutions.

Possibly went to Kankakee when August went there.41

Residence at time of August’s death given as Joe’s. By Leo’s death, her residence is given as Elgin IL.39

Listed in 1930 census at Elgin State Hospital. Age 29. Born in “United States.” Birthplace of parents given as “Germany.” Says she’s able to speak English and there’s nothing listed about another language being spoken in the home, though we know she spoke mostly German at least late in life. Her occupation is listed as “occupational class.” Other occupations are None, Ward, Mending Room, Sewing Room, and Artist (!). I would presume this means she was able to do some sort of light work. “Institution” is listed for “Industry.” Like several other entries on this page, she was originally given numerical classifications under “Code” and “Class of Worker,” but these numbers were then X’ed out. “Yes” is listed under “Whether actually at work.” No other info is given for her. 75 pages of the census book are devoted to the Elgin State Hospital (includes staff). Approximately 3500 patients recorded, male & female. Inf recorded over 02-25 April 1930. Precinct 24.223

No death certificate in Cook Co, IL. Suggested we try Lake Co, IN, since sometimes institutionalized cases were taken to Crown Point for final issuance of death certificate.1

Indiana death certificate found; says she died at St Margaret’s Hospital, not in Dolton. Lists her place of residence as Country Manor Convalenscent Home in Dolton. Reason for death: congestive heart failure. “Other significant conditions” lists “Organic Brain Syndrome Chronic.”37
