The information for much of this page came from excerpts of "The Early History of Macomb County" written in the late 1890's by Warren Parker. The list is alphabetical, and if you locate someone who may be an ancestor of yours, please email me and I will try to obtain more information from our public library for you. Elisha Granger
Elisha Granger, and his wife Mary "Molly", whose maiden name may have been Prentice or Prentiss, came to came to Macomb County, Michigan in 1824. The children who came with them were (1) Pharas, b. 1790/94, m. Sarah --?--, (2) Zarah, b. about 1793, m. Sarah Richardson, (3) Amgrad, b. 1796, m. Amanda --?--, (4) Susannah, b. 1798, m. Samuel Richardson, Jr., (5) Mary, b. 1800, m. Archibald Corey, (6) Aden, b. about 1810, m. Elizabeth Diets, and Mrs. Almire Loreach, and Rhoda, b. 1810, m.
Josiah Richarson. The parents were born in or near Suffield Ct., and moved to Sodus, Wayne co., NY, about 1793. All but the first child were born in New York. Elisha Granger died in 1835, and his wife Mary two years earlier. Both are buried in the Hart Cemetery.
Notes from Barbara Bartels’ records:
130Turkey Hills, the town of Elisha Granger’s birth, is now called East Granby CT. It was once part of Simsbury CT and until 1800 the same area was part of MA, although CT often claimed it. Elisha Granger was listed in Phelps, Ontario Cty NY as early as 1789. However, the oldest child Pharas was listed as born in 1790-1794 in CT. By 1807 Elisha and Molly Granger were in Sodus NY on Fly Creek.
An Elisha was termed a “Minister,” of Sodus NY, & this could’ve applied to either Elisha Jr or Sr, altho Elisha Sr would have been termed “of Phelps NY.” The family name of Mary “Polly” is reputed to be Printus, however no records have been found of a family by that name. The closest to this name located is Prentiss or Printup.
In 1824, the Grangers moved to Macomb Cty MI.
In the 1850 census, Amgrad’s birthplace was given as Canada. In the Ancestral file, Susannah’s birthplace was given as Quebec. While it is not known if the family lived in Canada, these birthplace listings give rise to speculation.
The children of this family scattered to IL, IN, and IA, Mary and A[l]den being the ones who stayed in Macomb Cty. Elisha Granger died of TB, then called consumption, and Mary Granger died at 72 of breast cancer.
The Granger family specialized in oddball names, and this family was no exception. Some ofthe names found in other Granger families in NY state were Almarin, Berrajah, Cerah, Dighton, Epaphrus, Gahaza, Ithemar, and more, in a list in the Granger file.
